Dr. Sheila Embleton’s speech – the complete text.

This year’s get-together dinner took place Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club Ltd. The event was dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the association and the recent progress made regarding the establishment of the Hellenic Studies Chair at York University.

The invited guests were Dr. Lorna Marsden, President, York University, Dr. Sheila Embleton, VP Academic, York University, Dr. Gary Smith, VP Advancement, York University, Dr. George Fallis (regrets), Dean of Arts, York University, Dr. Marie Bountrogianni, MPP, Adjunct Professor, McMaster U. and member of HCAAO , Mr. Stelios Mirkopoulos, President HHF, Mr. Theodoros Tzalalis(rep. Mr. Kostas Menegakis), Secretary, GCMT, Mr. Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos (regrets), Ambassador of Greece Mr. Panagiotis Kaloulis (rep. Mr. Alexandros Alexandris), Consul of Greece, and Mr. Efstathios Orfanidis, Consul General of Cyprus.

Guests started arriving around 6 p.m. for the cash bar reception and for chatting. After an excellent meal, Dr. Nota Klentrou, secretary of HCAAO and MC for the evening, welcomed the participants and introduced the invited guests.Dr. Marie Bountrogianni was delighted to introduce the keynote speakers, Dr. Lorna Marsden and Dr. Sheila Embleton. Dr. Lorna Marsden addressed the participants and emphasized the importance of Hellenic studies and the fruitful cooperation with HCAAO, HHF and the Greek community. Dr. Sheila Embleton gave a very informative talk on the nature and scope of York’s European Studies Programme and the place of Modern Greek Studies in it, pointing out the need for such a focus area in York’s curriculum. Dr. Christina Christara, president HCAAO, made a few remarks, emphasizing York’s consistent service to all communities. Finally, Dr. Nota Klentrou presented the “HCAAO distinguished member award” to Dr. Oreopoulos, for his vision, service and support to HCAAO during the years 1995-99, and closed the evening.
